Kanpur: A 17-year-old boy is feared to have drowned while trying to save a girl who was drowning in the Yamuna river in Kanpur Dehat’s Musanagar area on Sunday morning.According to police, at around 9.30 am, two girls, identified as Bhoori Devi (12) and Jyoti Devi (15), went to bathe in the Yamuna river. However, they ventured into deep water and began to drown.Hearing the girls’ screams, a teenager, identified as Siddhgopal, who was nearby, jumped into the river to rescue them. He managed to bring Jyoti out safely, but when he returned to rescue the other girl, he himself is feared to have drowned due to the strong current and depth.The girls’ mother, who was bathing buffaloes at the time, raised an alarm, following which people gathered at the spot.Subsequently, two women also entered the river to help, but they too began to drown. People present at the scene managed to pull them out safely using a saree and a rope.The matter was reported to the police, following which Bhognipur circle officer Rajeev Sirohi, SDM Bhognipur Devendra Singh, naib tehsildar Abhinav Chaturvedi, and Musanagar police reached the spot.The administration deployed three diving teams, and four hours later, an SDRF team also joined the search operation.CO Rajeev Sirohi said the search operation is ongoing, but the two are yet to be found.
