A worker’s account of being pressured to work through an emergency surgery recovery has gone viral, prompting calls for him to quit and report his employer

A Reddit user has gone viral after sharing a post about what he describes as an exhausting and unhealthy work culture that left him attending a meeting on the same day he underwent emergency surgery.
In the post, the man explained that he works in celebrity marketing, a field he says is demanding, underpaid, and often requires employees to be available around the clock.
Despite the challenges, he accepted the role because it was in his “dream” industry and hoped that staying long-term would help strengthen his resume after previous career setbacks.
According to the Redditor, he has not taken a single full day off in more than a year. He claims he regularly works weekends, nights, and even while travelling. Things came to a head when he unexpectedly required emergency surgery.
Rather than taking time away from work, he says his boss expected him to attend a meeting on the day of the procedure, and he ultimately did.
The user added that the pressure did not stop after surgery. While still recovering, he says he continues to face demanding expectations from his employer, leaving him feeling trapped between protecting his health and preserving his career.
The story quickly attracted hundreds of reactions, with many commenters expressing concern about what they viewed as an exploitative work environment.
Several users questioned whether the man was being properly classified at work. “If your boss dictates when and how you do your work, you’re not an independent contractor,” one commenter wrote.
Others encouraged him to contact labour authorities if he lives in the United States. “Even as an independent contractor, you still have rights. Rights that, if he violates, could get him fined out of existence.”
Multiple commenters argued that even independent contractors have legal protections and that potential workplace violations should be reported. “If you are an independent contractor, you control your hours. If you can’t, then you are likely a misclassified employee,” one person wrote.
Many readers also urged the Redditor to prioritise his health over the job. “Your health is not worth this job,” one user wrote.
While another bluntly stated, “This is the opposite of a dream job.”
Some pointed to the low pay mentioned in the post, arguing that retail and fast-food workers often earn more. “People at Dollar General make more than you,” one commenter claimed, while another added, “You can go make more at McDonald’s.”
