Rajkot: A predator and its prey became the centre of attention in Amreli’s Khambhaliya village on Monday morning, thanks to the situation they landed in. In a normal situation, a lioness chasing its next kill, and a dog sprinting to save itself from the jaws of death would have ended with pure muscle and raw hunger emerging the winner. But the script slipped. Both the hunter and the hunted missed their footing and plunged into a deep, open well, prompting a dramatic, five-hour rescue operation.What surprised and amused onlookers was that while forest officials worked to pull the animals out safely, shock and fear of being trapped in a confined space had changed the equation, with the lioness not so much as baring her fangs at the breakfast she was after moments ago. The dog, on the other hand, sat behind the lioness, seemingly resigned to its fate after several futile attempts to clamber up the well’s slippery walls.The incident occurred on the farm of former Khambhaliya sarpanch Atabhai Vagh, where the lioness reportedly had been roaming in search of prey. According to forest officials, the big cat had spotted the dog in an orchard and gave chase when it fell into the well, followed by the dog.Rajula range forest officer D K Makwana said that after Vagh informed his office about the incident, a team rushed to the spot and launched a carefully planned rescue operation. After a painstaking and cautious exercise lasting nearly five hours, the lioness was brought out safely first, and the dog next. Officials said both were unharmed.The big cat was caged and taken for a medical examination to assess her physical condition and identify any injuries caused by the fall. As a precautionary measure, the lioness has been shifted to the Babarkot Animal Care Centre, where veterinarians are monitoring her health and providing treatment.The incident has once again highlighted the threat posed by uncovered wells to wildlife in Gir. Local residents have called for stronger measures to secure open wells and prevent similar accidents involving wild animals.
