Vir Das ordered an Apple Watch from a quick-commerce app, expecting a brand-new one, but what he received left him calling it a “full scam”. Taking to his X account, the actor and comedian alleged that he had ordered an Apple Watch from Zepto for Rs 50,000 for an urgent shoot.
When the package arrived, he was surprised to find a counterfeit watch. He described the products as Chinese knock-offs rather than genuine Apple products.
In the clip that he posted, the comedian showed the watch and its packaging, pointing out several apparent red flags. Most notably, the packaging carried the phrase “Designed by Watch in China” instead of the original Apple branding and production information.
“We needed an Apple Watch for a shoot, so we got it off of Zepto. They charged us 50,000 bucks for a Series 11 or whatever. This shows up. It’s just like one dirty Apple Watch. It’s not sealed,” he said. “No logo. Nothing on the box. Here it says Series 9 all of a sudden.”
He continued, “There is one charger with no Apple logo. The watch says: Watch Series smartwatch, made in China, designed by Watch in China. So, this is not from any angle an Apple Watch. Bro, you charged us full price. Why are you scamming Zepto?”
Expressing his frustration, he wrote in the caption, “Okay. Am I wrong, do all Apple Watches look like this or is @ZeptoNow @zeptocares being shady with China copies? By the way their customer device agent on the phone said there’s nothing they could do. Full scam. We needed one quick for a shoot. They charged us 50k.”
Zepto Responds
As the incident gained attention, Zepto responded to Das’ post, writing in the comments, “Hey, this isn’t the experience we aim to deliver, and I’d like to get this sorted for you. Could you please share your order details and contact number via DM? Once we have that, we’ll look into it right away.”
People Share Similar Experiences With Zepto
The post quickly gained attention on the platforms, with users sharing similar experiences and even calling out the quick-commerce platform.
One person said, “Rule 1 of e-commerce: don’t accept the order if it is not a sealed box. Generally, electronic items have an open box delivery. But Ya, Zepto is big on scams. Have stopped ordering from them.”
“Oh God, I had a similar experience buying an Apple Pencil, which they never took any accountability for. I deleted the app and have never used it since,” a person shared.
Someone else said, “I was scammed by @ZeptoNow similarly upon ordering AirPods Pro ( Order ID TVUTNDRPL07775). They delivered a fake product and their customer care asked me to get in touch with Apple. No resolution yet. Glad you’re exposing their fraudulent practices.”

Meanwhile, one individual said, “You will be getting a replacement /refund (obviously), and you’re lucky you got to speak with a customer agent. For regular people like us, usually they say automated mail them. Later, just close it saying can’t do anything.”
