Namakkal: A worker died and another one was injured after a dilapidated building collapsed when it was being demolished at Ganesapuram in Namakkal town on Tuesday.The deceased has been identified as K Venkatesh, 21, a construction worker from Palappattiy near Paramathi Velur. He was caught under the rubble and died on the spot. His relative V Satheesh, 25, from Sengappalli survived, but lost a leg in the incident. He was taken to Namakkal Government Medical College Hospital for immediate medical care and later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment.Meanwhile, the workers’ relatives blocked the road in front of the Namakkal district collector’s office in protest and demanded suitable compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured workers. Namakkal town police personnel led by inspector Elavarasan held talks with the protesters. They dispersed after being assured of appropriate financial support from the govt’s labour department.Police have registered a case against building owner Deepa, engineer Praveen, and contractor Sivakumar.
