Kanpur: Anger over contaminated water supply for the past year in Kanpur’s Juhi area spilled onto the streets on Monday, with Ward 14 Kidwai Nagar Sabzi Mandi corporator Shalu Sunil Kanojia, along with local women, staging a strong protest by entering a pit at Juhi Bara Devi Chauraha carrying dirty, black water. The protestors raised slogans against the Jal Nigam and Nagar Nigam and demanded an early solution to the problem, which they said has affected around 10,000 people.Shalu Sunil Kanojia said black and contaminated water had been continuously supplied in around 15 areas of Juhi for the past year. She said complaints had been made to officials several times, but the problem remained unresolved.She alleged that the contaminated water posed a threat to the health of thousands of people. “Not only this, people are being made to drink water like poison,” she said, adding that around 10,000 people in the affected areas had been forced to drink dirty water for a long time.Local residents said the water smelt bad and had turned black, increasing the risk of diseases among children and the elderly. They demanded that the administration immediately inspect and replace the damaged pipeline to ensure a supply of clean drinking water to residents.
