Till May this year, speeding cases up by 200%
Goa police have registered over 17,000 cases of over speeding till May this year, as compared to over 6,000 in first five months of 2025

Panaji: Cases of over speeding have seen a 200% jump in the state and have been a major cause of accidents from Jan to May 2026 as compared to the same period last year. Goa police have registered over 17,000 cases of over speeding till May this year, as compared to over 6,000 in the first five months of 2025.Similarly, there have been around 150% jump in cases of riding two-wheelers without a helmet. However, there has been a 50% reduction in drunken driving cases during the same period.Around 40,000 cases for riding without a helmet were registered till May this year, as compared to over 16,000 during a similar period last year. Goa police booked over 1,300 cases of drunken driving in the first five months of the year as compared to over 2,500 during the same period last year.“The main cause of road accidents is over speeding. Most of the accidents are reported during the peak officer hours,” a senior police officer said.He added that when the traffic sentinel scheme was in force, people were scared to ride their two-wheelers without a helmet. “But now most two-wheeler riders have stopped wearing helmets. If one looks at the traffic cell analysis, most people who died in road accidents are two-wheeler riders,” a senior police officer said.A total of 1,094 accidents were reported in Goa from Jan to May 2026, as against 1,017 during the corresponding period of 2025. There has been a decrease in overall registration of traffic violations by around 15% as compared to previous year.A senior police officer said due to state govt decision to allow only PSIs and above level officers to register the cases of traffic violation, there has been a decrease in enforcement on the roads.GFX SENT TO VALENCIA
