Three held for posing as Naga sadhus, cheating Pernem man

Mapusa: Mopa Airport police on Monday arrested three men for allegedly posing as Naga sadhus and cheating a 59-year-old Pernem resident of cash and gold jewellery worth about Rs 1.2 lakh last week.Police arrested Narunath Parasnath Madari, 39, Dipaknath Suramnath Madari, 26, and Jannath Parasnath Madari, 26, after they were intercepted in Maharashtra’s Dhule district during an inter-state technical surveillance operation.Police said the trio approached Suryakant Vir at Torxem, Pernem, while travelling through the village in a white car with a Gujarat registration. Dressed in Naga sadhu attire, they allegedly gained Vir’s trust by promising to bless his valuables and induced him to hand over his gold chain, a gold ring and Rs 2,600 in cash before fleeing.Vir later filed a complaint at the Mopa airport police station. Though he could not recall the last four digits of the vehicle number, he reported that the car’s rear windshield had a prominent Naga sadhu logo.The investigation team, led by PI Ninad Deulkar and PSI Sagar Vazarkar, under the supervision of North Goa SP Harishchandra Madkaikar and SDPO Pernem Salim Shaik, analysed CCTV footage and confirmed that the car had crossed the Patradevi border check-post into Maharashtra.
