A company’s strict attendance policy has gone viral after an employee found the perfect way to use it against the management. The employee’s reaction, days after losing an hour’s pay for arriving 11 minutes late, has been described by many internet users as “perfect malicious compliance.”

The incident came to light after an X user, Wolfe, shared a post about a new attendance policy introduced at their workplace. According to the post, the company had implemented a strict rule stating that if an employee arrived 10 minutes late, they would lose pay for an entire hour.

As per Wolfe’s account, one of their Gen Z colleagues arrived 11 minutes late on a Monday. Instead of protesting the decision or arguing with management, the employee quietly accepted the one-hour salary deduction and carried on with the workday. However, the situation took an unexpected turn later that same week.

On Friday, the company’s internet reportedly stopped working for nearly an hour, disrupting work across the office. Once the connection was restored, management allegedly asked employees to remain at work beyond their scheduled hours to make up for the lost productivity caused by the outage.

That is when the Gen Z employee delivered a response that quickly caught the internet’s attention.

According to Wolfe’s follow-up comment, the employee simply packed up their belongings and said, “By company policy, if an hour can disappear over 11 minutes, then an hour can disappear because your Wi-Fi did too. See you on Monday.”

The exchange struck a chord with social media users, who viewed it as an example of an employee applying the company’s own standards equally rather than refusing to follow them. The post has since gone viral, attracting significant engagement and prompting discussions about fairness, accountability and workplace policies.

One user wrote, “You can’t demand accountability from employees while refusing to hold the company to the same standard. Respect has to go both ways.”

Another commented, “The Gen Z employee probably didn’t complain on Monday because they were already planning to hold the company to the same standard it expected from employees.”

Echoing a similar sentiment, a third user said, “Fairness works both ways. If the rules are strict for employees, accountability should be just as consistent on the company’s side. 👀💯”

A fourth user praised the employee’s response, writing, “Malicious compliance at its absolute finest. If 11 minutes equals an hour to them, then an hour of dead Wi-Fi equals home time. Fair is fair! 🤷‍♂️😂”

Another user summed up the incident in a humorous remark, saying, “Bruh spun around and used the rules against the rule.”
