Thiruvananthapuram: Cyber police in the district have registered a case after an AI-generated fake video featuring ADGP (law and order) P Vijayan was circulated on social media in an alleged attempt to defraud the public, police said on Sunday.The fake Facebook reel shows Vijayan in an official police uniform, with his image and voice digitally manipulated to make it appear as though he was endorsing a scheme involving the sale of old currency notes.In the altered audio, the fake voice of the officer claims that no registration fee is required and that people could earn up to Rs 25 lakh through the scheme, officials said. Police suspect the video was designed to lend credibility to the fraudulent offer by using the identity and voice of a senior police officer.According to police, the video was uploaded on Aug 1 on a Facebook page. It came to the notice of the cyber police during routine cyber patrolling. Following this, a case was registered at the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station. Investigators have started tracing the person behind the Facebook account using the mobile phone number provided on the account. Police are examining whether anyone was cheated after responding to the fraudulent offer.Cyber police are probing whether similar AI-generated videos featuring other police officers or politicians were created and circulated on social media to deceive people.The case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act relating to impersonation, forgery and cyber fraud.
