Times News NetworkKanpur: The zoo authorities have become more alert following confirmation of rabies in wild dog pups at the Kanpur Zoo. The wild dogs are currently under close observation, with their movements being monitored. The medical personnel and the staff who were in contact with the pups have received anti-rabies vaccinations.An investigation is underway to determine how the rabies virus was transmitted to the pups despite prior vaccinations. Last year, a pair of wild dogs was transferred to the zoo from Visakhapatnam. Currently, there are two male and one female wild dogs present. The female wild dog gave birth to three healthy cubs in January. However, in May, the cubs began to eat less. They were examined, but no definitive cause was identified. Their health continued to decline, resulting in the death of one cub on May 28, another on June 6, and the last on June 10.Following their postmortem examinations, the viscera were sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Bareilly for analysis. The report received late Friday night confirmed the presence of rabies.Wildlife doctor Dr. Nasir said that the IVRI report verified the presence of rabies in the wild dog pups, prompting an increase in vigilance. The pups had received vaccinations, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain how the rabies infection was transmitted to them.
