Days after resigning from the Karnataka CM’s post, Siddaramaiah was appointed as a member of the Congress Working Committee, the top decision-making body of the party.
Siddaramaiah’s elevation signals a national role for the Congress leader who had earlier refused to leave Karnataka politics. News18 had reported earlier, citing sources, that Congress offered a national role to Siddaramaiah in the run-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha election.
The Congress party also wanted to accommodate Siddaramaiah in the Rajya Sabha. However, he had rejected the proposal.
Siddaramaiah was in New Delhi on Tuesday to hold deliberations with the top brass of the Congress on giving final shape to the new cabinet in Karnataka. DK Shivakumar will take oath as the chief minister of Karnataka on June 3 in Bengaluru.
What Is Congress Working Committee?
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is the executive committee and the apex decision-making body of the Indian National Congress (INC). It acts as the central hub of power within the party, responsible for shaping political strategy, guiding national election campaigns, and enforcing the party’s constitution.
The central decision-making core consists of 39 permanent members, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.
Besides permanent members, there are 15 Special Invitees who represent the party’s various frontal wings, communication headers, and regional coordinates.
