The two-wheeler sales of Honda have grown 12 per cent in May 2026 as capacity expansion plans have gathered pace in India
While several manufacturers are looking to bring in new launches and electrification strategies, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India is simultaneously preparing for future demand through a major manufacturing expansion. The company posted another month of healthy growth in May 2026 while also advancing plans to significantly increase production capacity over the next few years.
In line with the ever-present demand, Honda recorded total sales of 5.18 lakh units in May 2026 – registering a 12 per cent increase over the 4.65 lakh units sold during the same month last year. Its domestic sales remained the primary volume contributor. HMSI sold 4.59 lakh units in India during May 2026 compared to 4.17 lakh units with a 10 per cent increase.
The company continues to benefit from its expansive presence in the commuter motorcycle and scooter segments where products such as the Activa, Shine and Dio maintain good demand. The brand’s exports recorded even better growth as overseas shipments rose 24 per cent to 59,000 units compared to 47,000 units recorded during the corresponding month last year.

Earlier this year, the Japanese auto major confirmed plans to add a third production line at its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan. Scheduled to become operational in 2028, the new line will add annual production capacity of 6.7 lakh units. To support the project, Honda will invest around Rs. 1,500 crore and acquire an additional 74,000 square metres of land adjacent to the existing facility.
The expansion looks to accommodate growing demand for 125 cc and 160 cc scooters and motorcycles – segments that stay put witnessing increasing customer interest. Once operational, the new production line will take the total capacity of Honda’s second plant to 20.1 lakh units annually. The investment is also expected to generate around 2,000 new jobs.

Honda currently operates through a network of more than 7,000 customer touchpoints across the country. Combined with its diverse product range, the extensive network supports steady sales growth despite increasing competition. While sales improves in both domestic and export markets, Honda will introduce a slew of new products to further expand its presence.
