Pune: Cybercrooks used a deepfake video clip of late industrialist Ratan Tata to lure a woman and cheat her of Rs 4.09 lakh.The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Saturday registered a case against fraudsters after the woman (38), a resident of Ambegaon, reported the matter. The complainant works as a clerk at a private firm.According to the police, the complainant came across a fake video of late industrialist Ratan Tata on social media urging people to invest in a scheme, which will ultimately help in India’s development. After she opened a link provided in the video, the cybercrooks asked her to download a cell phone application. Subsequently, a fraudster contacted her.They lured the woman by promising her good returns on investments in the stock market. Believing them, she transferred Rs 4.09 lakh online to bank accounts provided by the fraudsters. However, the woman did not receive any returns after transferring the money.In recent times, this is the second such case of using deepfakes to lure people. Recently, a deepfake video of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was sued to dupe two people.
