An Indian-origin man living in the United States has shared his experience of working in both India and the US, highlighting clear differences in how work hours and after-work time are handled. He said that over the years, he has seen a major shift in how work life balance is treated in both countries.
In a video posted on Instagram, Nitin Malhotra spoke about his journey from working in India for several years to living in the US for over a decade. He explained that while both places have structured work systems, the way people respect work hours feels very different.
Leaving Office On Time Felt Unusual In India
Malhotra said that during his time working in India, finishing an eight-hour shift and leaving on time often felt awkward. He shared that people would notice when he left early and sometimes react as if it was unusual.
“If I started work at 10 am and got up to leave at 6 pm, or even around 6:30 pm after finishing my eight hours, the office staff and people around me would stare as if something was wrong. It felt as though they were wondering, ‘Where is he going so early?’” he said.
Clear Work Hours In The US
He said his experience in the US has been much more structured. Once his work hours are over, he simply logs off and leaves without any pressure to stay longer.
“Here, I work for eight hours, clock out and go home. People around me are not bothered by it. Once my shift is over, I simply leave for home,” he said.
Overtime Rules And Manager Support
Malhotra also shared that in the US, extra work hours are usually paid properly. He recalled an incident where his manager appreciated him for taking a work call after hours.
“She was so happy that I picked up. The next day, she appreciated me and also paid me time and a half for the extra work,” he said. He added, “In America, this is the work culture. If you work more than 40 hours, you are paid overtime, usually time and a half.”
Different Approach To After-Work Time
He explained that while India does have formal work systems, the culture around boundaries and personal time is different in the US. He said managers generally do not disturb employees after work hours, and expectations are clearly defined.
“Managers here do not unnecessarily call you after work. Your hours are clearly set, and everything is properly structured. People here are much happier because of this culture. I honestly feel India should also follow this approach,” he said.
