Faced with an uncertain future, he asked fellow Redditors whether his ₹46 crore net worth would be enough to leave his job, return to India, and focus entirely on spending time with his wife.
The post, shared on the popular Reddit community dedicated to financial independence and early retirement, detailed the man’s personal circumstances and raised a question that was as much about life as it was about money.
Having spent nearly 15 years working overseas, the NRI explained that he and his wife had built a net worth of approximately $5 million (around ₹46 crore). However, after years of watching his wife fight advanced-stage cancer, he admitted that he was beginning to think about a future where emotional exhaustion might make it impossible for him to continue working.
Opening up about his situation, he wrote that his wife, whom he described as “the love of my life,” has been battling cancer for almost five years and that her prognosis remains poor. The couple do not have children and have largely focused on their careers during their years abroad.
Seeking guidance from others who understand the concept of “FatFIRE”,a form of early retirement that allows individuals to maintain a high standard of living, the man asked whether $5 million would be enough to comfortably stop working and settle in India if his circumstances became overwhelming.
The post quickly gained attention, with Reddit users offering both financial perspectives and emotional support.
One user wrote, “First of all really sorry to hear. All the best in the journey. But to your point – and making a lot of assumptions – $5M is plenty to have a very very comfortable life in Tier 1 India.”
