Kanpur: A 38-year-old man, who allegedly set himself ablaze outside Maharajpur police station in Kanpur on July 14 after arriving to seek action in a marital dispute, succumbed to his injuries at the Trauma Centre in Lucknow late Sunday. Four policemen, including the station house officer (SHO), had also suffered burns while trying to save him.Additional deputy commissioner of police (east) Shiva Singh said Mahesh had come to the police station to submit an application regarding a dispute with his wife. “After submitting the application, he doused himself with an inflammable substance outside the police station premises and entered the premises in a burning condition. Four policemen, including the SHO of Maharajpur, sustained burn injuries while trying to rescue him.”He was rushed to the hospital with 50 per cent burns. Preliminary investigation suggested the incident stemmed from a family dispute between the couple.Mahesh’s sister, Daya, said he narrated the entire incident while undergoing treatment. She alleged that a dispute erupted after an unidentified man allegedly started living with Mahesh’s wife,, who then returned to her parental home. When Mahesh went to bring her back, he was allegedly assaulted by his in-laws and later beaten at the police station, after which he submitted a written complaint at Maharajpur police station.Maharajpur SHO Janardan Singh said further action would be taken after examining the statements and complaints submitted by Mahesh’s sister and brother, along with the postmortem report.
