Belagavi: Heavy rain continued across Western Ghats and parts of Belagavi district, causing rivers to flow in spate. Water levels have risen significantly in Krishna and its tributaries, including Doodhganga, Vedaganga, Hiranyakeshi, Malaprabha and Ghataprabha rivers.According to the district administration, due to incessant rainfall in Koyna reservoir region of Maharashtra, Krishna River recorded an inflow of over 1.3 lakh cusecs near Kallol in Chikodi taluk. Chikodi assistant commissioner Subhash Sampagavi said the district administration has made all necessary preparations to respond to any flood-related situation.Taluks including Chikodi, Nippani, Athani, Raibag, Hukkeri, and Kagawad have received moderate rainfall for four days. However, due to the heavy rains in Maharashtra, nine low-level bridges in Chikodi have been submerged. On Sunday, the major interstate connectivity, Ugar-Kudachi bridge, was submerged and traffic on the bridge was completely stopped, leaving the public facing transport difficulties. The district administration has issued instructions to people living in the river basin not to enter the river for any reason.Subhas Sampagavi, an assistant commissioner in Chikodi, said that the district administration has made necessary preparations to deal with the situation arising from the rise in river water. The inflow of Hidkal reservoir increased to 20,000 cusecs on Monday. The reservoir’s water level has risen by 2.5 feet in a single day. Hidkal reservoir, which has a storage capacity of 51 tmcft, had 38 tmcft of water stored till Monday evening.
