Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) commissioner Kartik M visited the Rakaskop reservoir on Monday to inspect water levels after heavy rains in the Western Ghats and Maharashtra’s Tilari catchment significantly increased inflow into the Markandeya River, filling the reservoir.Rakaskop and Hidkal reservoirs are the main sources of drinking water for Belagavi city. Just a month ago, Rakaskop had nearly dried up, triggering a water crisis and forcing the BCC to make alternative arrangements for supply.Following the inspection, Kartik M said drinking water is currently being supplied to the city from both Rakaskop and Hidkal reservoirs. He said the filling of the reservoir has improved the city’s water situation considerably.According to the commissioner, 10 wards covered under the 24×7 water supply scheme will soon receive round-the-clock water supply as before. During the summer shortage, residents in these wards received water for only two hours once every two to three days.In the remaining 48 wards, where water was being supplied once every eight to 10 days during the peak summer months, supply has now improved to once every two to three days.A total of 105 million litres per day (MLD) of drinking water is currently being supplied to Belagavi from Rakaskop and Hidkal reservoirs. Kartik M said the available storage is expected to meet the city’s drinking water needs until May next year, easing concerns over shortages in the coming months.
