City sees heavy showers, IMD forecasts more rain and thunderstorms

Kanpur: Weather turned pleasant in the evening on Monday as light to moderate showers lashed several parts of the city, providing much-needed relief to residents from the sultry conditions prevailing during the day.About 14.9 mm of rainfall was recorded in the evening at Company bagh which is highest in the city. While light drizzle continued till the time of filing this report.The city had received moderate to heavy rainfall on Sunday evening, with the CSA weather observatory recording 62.9 mm of rain. The showers made the intervening night of Sunday and Monday pleasant, although the minimum temperature was recorded at 26.2°C, almost the same as on Sunday morning.Despite the substantial rainfall, Kanpur experienced sultry weather during the day on Monday. The sky remained largely overcast, though the sun emerged for around 10 minutes at about 8 am. The maximum temperature was recorded at 35°C, one degree lower than Sunday’s maximum.High humidity, however, continued to trouble residents. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 93%. South-easterly winds blowing at a speed of 4 to 12.7 kmph failed to provide much relief from the humidity.Conditions improved only when rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning occurred around 4 pm.CSA weather expert S N Sunil Pandey said that due to atmospheric moisture and an increased influx of moisture caused by developing weather systems, the Kanpur division is likely to witness cloudy skies between Aug 4 and 6.He said isolated areas could experience strong winds, scattered light drizzle and light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning. Strong surface winds and intermittent sunshine are also likely, which may lead to humid conditions.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall in all districts of the Kanpur division during the next 24 hours, covering Aug 3 and 4. Maximum temperatures across the districts are likely to remain between 31°C and 34°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to range from 26°C to 28°C.
