A low CGPA can make the early stages of an engineering career challenging, especially when campus placements have strict academic eligibility criteria. However, a techie’s career journey is being widely discussed online as an example of how technical skills can help candidates move beyond academic setbacks.

According to a post shared on X by Vikas Alwys, Bansal completed his B.Tech from JIIT Noida with an overall CGPA of around 6. His academic score reportedly prevented him from appearing for even a single campus placement opportunity during college.

Rather than allowing his academic record to become the defining feature of his resume, Bansal focused on showcasing his strengths. He reportedly highlighted his college, branch and technical abilities, particularly his programming skills. He had also achieved the Candidate Master rank on Codeforces, a competitive programming platform.

His early job search, however, was far from smooth. Bansal reportedly applied for several internships and faced multiple rejections. One notable setback came when he applied for an internship at Adobe. According to the post, he performed well in the initial technical rounds but was eventually rejected by HR because of his low CGPA.

His programming abilities eventually helped him get another opportunity. Through a referral, Bansal secured an internship at MakeMyTrip. The experience proved to be an important stepping stone, as having MakeMyTrip on his resume reportedly helped him secure a full-time opportunity at DE Shaw.

His career then took an interesting turn. The same Adobe that had previously rejected his internship application later hired him as a Member of Technical Staff. According to the post, the DE Shaw experience on his resume played a role in helping him secure the opportunity.

After spending around two years at Adobe, Bansal reportedly moved to Microsoft. He is now working as an SDE-2, with the post claiming that his annual compensation is around Rs 90 lakh.

The original post highlighted his journey, stating: “Meet Naman Bansal, who completed his B.Tech from JIIT Noida. This guy had a very low CGPA of just 6 overall, which made him unable to sit for a single placement in college. Today, he is an SDE-2 at Microsoft, earning ₹90 LPA 🔥”

The post subsequently gained traction, with several users drawing lessons from Bansal’s experience.

One user wrote, “Inspiring. Low CGPA no barrier Naman’s coding skills and grit led him to Microsoft SDE-2 success.”

Another commented, “CGPA can close doors, but it doesn’t define your career. 🔥”

A third user said, “Highlighting what you’re good at instead of hiding what you’re not is honestly underrated resume advice 🔥”

Another summed up the journey by writing, “CGPA was the weakness, coding became the weapon. What a comeback.”
