A British man travelled to India for a double knee replacement after facing a lengthy NHS wait, with the treatment costing far less and helping him walk again within hours. Facing a lengthy wait for surgery in the UK, Jean Paul reportedly opted for treatment in India, where the package cost sparked a debate online.
According to a video shared by themedicaltravelcompany on Instagram, Jean Paul had been struggling with persistent knee pain that had begun to interfere with his everyday life. Simple activities such as walking his dogs and taking evening strolls with his wife had become increasingly difficult.
Doctors in the UK reportedly confirmed that both of his knees required replacement, but simultaneous bilateral surgery was not available to him through his local NHS treatment pathway.
With his condition affecting his quality of life and a long wait ahead, Jean eventually decided to explore treatment options in India. Before making the journey, he reportedly spent months preparing for the procedure and lost around 19 kg to meet the medical requirements for surgery.
Jean was subsequently treated at Max Healthcare in India, where he underwent a double knee replacement. The procedure was reportedly followed by an intensive rehabilitation programme, with the British patient spending two weeks at a specialised aftercare facility and undergoing daily physiotherapy to regain his mobility.
One of the biggest factors behind his decision to travel to India was reportedly the considerable difference in treatment costs. The procedure in the UK was estimated at around £40,000 (approximately ₹51.56 lakh), while the package in India reportedly cost about £14,000 (approximately ₹18.05 lakh).
The India package reportedly covered considerably more than the surgery itself, including round-trip flights, accommodation, meals, insurance and clinical care. The contrast in costs made medical treatment in India an attractive option despite the distance involved.
Following his surgery and rehabilitation, Jean reportedly returned to the UK and was able to walk again. He was described as having resumed his evening walks along the canal with his wife and taking his dogs out for walks.
The case comes amid India’s expanding medical tourism industry. The country has increasingly emerged as a destination for international patients seeking comparatively affordable treatment, access to specialised doctors and shorter waiting periods for several procedures.
The Medical Travel Company highlighted Jean’s experience in a post shared on August 10, bringing attention to the stark difference between the estimated cost of treatment in the UK and the comprehensive package he received in India.
The story was also shared by X user @IndianTechGuide, after which it gained traction online and prompted a range of reactions from users.
“This is such a huge space if promoted properly. Nothing can beat India when it comes to Dental care and instant availability of any doctor and treatment. In West even doctor’s work like 9-5,” said one user.
“And Indian goes to foreign for their better treatment. Irony,” said another.
“Medical tourism is really a thing for India. Do that at a fraction of cost in India and best quality doctors at the top most restuarant, still cheaper if you include the return air ticket + tour of India on top too,” said a third.
“Yes Medical field is blessing in our country. Seen so many videos of people abroad saying they need to wait for 2-3 weeks for doc’s appointment even for small things and in India we have 9-10 doc’s available at every town level,” said a fourth.
“Same fcukers will go back to their countries and defame India, indulge in racism and hatred towards Indians and India. They praise and use India when convenient,” said another.
