Noida: A seven-year-old girl remained missing on Tuesday after being swept away by strong currents in the Kherli canal near Dankaur police station in Greater Noida.A search operation involving the national disaster response force , police, provincial armed constabulary (PAC), fire department and district administration continued throughout the day.Police said the girl, Mamta, had gone to play with her friends near the canal on Monday evening. Around 8pm , they allegedly went into the water for a swim. Eyewitnesses claimed that she was swept away by strong currents. The girl lived with her family in a makeshift hut near the railway station. Her mother, Santosh, works as a daily-wage labourer to support the family.They immediately informed the girl’s family, who rushed to the spot. The child’s clothes were found lying on the canal bank. Family members and locals searched the area on their own for several hours before alerting the police.Teams from the Dankaur police station reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. Considering the depth of the canal and the swift current, the NDRF was called in to assist with the search. Divers searched multiple stretches of the canal, while rescue teams continued combing the surrounding areas throughout the day.Sub-divisional magistrate (sadar) Ashutosh Gupta also visited the site to review the rescue efforts. Station house officer of the Dankaur police station Manoj Kumar said rescue teams were making every possible effort to locate the missing child. He added that search operations were being carried out in nearby stretches of the canal as well, but no breakthrough had been achieved till late evening.The incident has left the family devastated, with relatives and neighbours anxiously waiting for any news. The authorities said the search operation would continue until the child is traced.
