Nagpur: Daily traffic snarls at Gittikhadan Square and the New Katol Naka-Ring Road intersection have long tested commuters’ patience, with residents and traders hoping the proposed twin flyovers will finally bring relief.Both junctions witness heavy traffic throughout the day as vehicles from Katol Road, Ring Road and adjoining residential areas converge. Congestion peaks during evening rush hours, when signal failures, roadside encroachments, haphazard parking and increasing vehicular volume lead to long delays and slow-moving traffic.A TOI visit found footpaths around Gittikhadan Square encroached upon by hawkers and temporary structures, forcing pedestrians onto the carriageway. Poorly maintained walkways and the constant flow of two-wheelers, cars, buses and heavy vehicles further add to the chaos.“We face congestion every day as vehicles approach Gittikhadan Square from all directions. Traffic signals frequently malfunction, making the situation worse during peak hours. The proposed flyover is expected to streamline traffic movement and provide much-needed relief,” said Raju Khandelwal, a shop owner.Frequent accidents at the junction are a major concern. “Non-functional CCTV cameras often hinder investigations. A flyover will separate through traffic from local vehicles, improving safety and reducing conflict points,” said Kishor Pawar, local resident.Poor parking management and deteriorating road conditions deter customers from visiting the market. “Traffic between Gittikhadan Square and Manjidana Colony is at its worst between 6pm and 8pm. Similar congestion is witnessed at the New Katol Naka-Ring Road junction. The twin flyovers will reduce travel time, improve safety and ease pressure on this busy corridor,” said Darshan Harode, a shop owner.
