COIMBATORE: Flight operations were suspended at the Coimbatore International Airport for approximately two hours on Thursday evening following a compound wall collapse caused by heavy rain. A total of five flights – including three arrivals and two departures – were affected. They included Coimbatore – Bengaluru- Coimbatore, Coimbatore – Chennai- Coimbatore, and Hyderabad – Coimbatore flights. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed many parts of the city. Rain caused severe damage to the compound wall of the airport in two locations, one near SIHS Colony and the other near Singanallur. The wall collapse happened after 7pm, and flight services were suspended around 7.30pm Central Industrial Security Force personnel were deployed at the two places where the wall collapsed to prevent anyone intruding into the compound. Sources said the debris of the wall had been cleared off. Flight services resumed by 9.30pm, after approximately two hours.
