Members of a farmers’ organisation staged a demonstration near the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday and submitted a petition at the grievances redress meeting seeking a comprehensive waiver of cooperative crop loans.
The petitioners urged the State government to withdraw the recently announced crop loan waiver scheme, contending that it would provide limited benefits to a majority of farmers. They said many cultivators who have been unable to repay loans due to recurring losses and low returns would remain outside the scheme’s eligibility criteria. The farmers called for implementation of the Chief Minister’s election promise of waiving cooperative crop loans for small farmers and extending relief to others.
In another petition, residents of Maa Sakthi Nagar in Vellanapatti panchayat near Annur sought drinking water supply, road facilities and civic approvals.
The residents said around 200 families have been living in the area for over 24 years, but continue to lack basic amenities. They alleged that authorities have not processed patta transfers in Survey Nos. 373 and 374, building plan approvals, house tax assessments and new electricity connections, citing a pending court case.
The petitioners said there was no court stay order preventing such services and urged the District Collector to intervene and resolve the issues.
