As the Trinamool Congress (TMC) faces rebellions and high-profile resignations, senior party leader Kalyan Banerjee added a fresh twist in the saga by refusing to back TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the signature forgery row, accusing him of destroying the party.
Speaking to reporters, Kalyan Banerjee said, “I will not appear for Abhishek Banerjee in any case because I do not like his arrogant attitude. I have spent 45 years in this profession; all these people have worked with me as juniors. How can he humiliate me?”
His remarks came as the recent crisis in the TMC has focused on Abhishek Banerjee’s involvement in party activities. Since the TMC’s crushing defeat in the West Bengal elections, dissent had intensified over Abhishek Banerjee’s “high-handed” leadership.
The senior parliamentarian joined other rebel leaders in blaming Abhishek for the TMC’s electoral defeat and the current crisis. “I am senior to him in politics as well. He needs to understand that it is because of him that we lost. He also needs to understand that the party is facing this crisis because of him,” he added.
Kalyan Banerjee’s Ultimatum To Mamata
Kalyan Banerjee, one of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s outspoken loyalists who has defended her amid a string of resignations and revolts, gave her an ultimatum to either choose him or Abhishek Banerjee, bringing renewed attention to the relationship between different power centres within the party.
“I cannot tolerate disrespect. I will urge Didi: if you remain dependent on Abhishek Banerjee, then stick with him and leave me. But if you part ways with Abhishek Banerjee, then I am with you. He has destroyed our party,” he told reporters.
