Times News NetworkKanpur: Delhi-based woman wrestler Poonam defeated male wrestler Jai Singh of Banda in a three-minute bout to win the top prize of Rs 11,000 at the 309th edition of the traditional wrestling championship held at the three-century-old Jageshwar Dham wrestling arena on Monday. The wrestling event was organized on the occasion of the second Monday of Sawan as per tradition and custom.The closely contested bout remained evenly matched for nearly two-and-a-half minutes. However, Poonam turned the tables in the final 15 seconds, throwing Jai Singh to the ground three times in quick succession to secure victory.Impressed by her performance, the organisers awarded Poonam an additional special prize of Rs 5,000.Mayor Pramila Pandey inaugurated the 309th edition of the wrestling championship. A total of 55 bouts were held during the event, including six contests featuring women wrestlers.
