As vote counting continues in Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate VS Babu has delivered a major surprise in Kolathur assembly constituency by defeating Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Chief Minister MK Stalin. Kolathur was long considered a DMK bastion.
After 22 rounds of counting for the April 23 polls, the TVK leader received over 82,000 votes, leaving behind the Chief Minister, who secured over 74,000 votes. Meanwhile, P Santhana Krishnan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured third spot with a little over 18,000 votes.
All About TVK’s VS Babu
VS Babu’s rise is notable given his long political journey across parties. A former MLA from Purasawalkam between 2006 and 2011, he earlier held key organisational responsibilities in DMK, including serving as its north Chennai district secretary. He was once tasked with overseeing Kolathur but later moved out of the party, eventually joining the AIADMK before shifting to TVK this year, according to a report in NDTV.
Now serving as TVK joint general secretary, the 75-year-old leader emerged as an unlikely challenger in one of the state’s most closely watched contests.
The broader trends suggest that TVK, founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay, is making a significant impact in its debut election. The party has already won several seats and is leading in many others across the 234-member Assembly, posing a challenge to both the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK.
Who Has Won Which Seats?
As of 5.50 pm, TVK has won 21 seats and is leading in 89. While DMK has claimed eight seats and is ahead in 51 constituencies. AIADMK has secured victory in three seats and is leading in 42 seats. While Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is ahead in five seats. If these trends hold, TVK could register one of the most striking electoral breakthroughs in Tamil Nadu politics.
