Walking home alone in the middle of the night is something many women think twice about. For one Indian woman living in Germany, the experience made her reflect on how different life feels when safety is not a constant concern.

Her video, shared on Instagram, has started a conversation about women’s safety, with many people agreeing with her thoughts while others pointed out places in India where they feel safe even late at night.

She Shares Her Late-Night Experience

Upasna Gambhir recorded herself while walking home at 3 am in Berlin. As she walked through the quiet streets, she spoke about how thankful she felt that she could travel alone at that hour without worrying about her safety.

She said, “Guys, it is 3:00 am right now, and I am in Berlin, Germany. And I am heading home now. And it makes me realise so many times. First of all, I am so grateful for this freedom that I have here, that I can go home at any time at night, I can go out for a walk at any time at night, and there is nothing that I have to be afraid of.”

She also mentioned that although Berlin is often considered one of the less safe cities in Germany, she still feels much safer there than in many other places. While sharing her thoughts, Gambhir wondered when women in India would be able to enjoy the same freedom.

She said, “So many times this thought comes in my mind that, when will it be like this in India? How many decades will it take? Let’s leave 3:00 AM, at 11:00 PM, 10:00 PM, even during the daytime it is unsafe, right? During the daytime too, you can’t just do whatever you want to do there. You have to be careful of your surroundings.”

She ended her message on a hopeful note, saying she believes future generations may bring positive change through better education and awareness.

People Shared Different Views

The video received many reactions from social media users, with several saying they agreed with her. “I completely agree with everything you said,” a user commented. Another simply wrote, “Right.”

“Everything you said is absolutely true,” another person said, while someone else added, “You spoke the truth.”

Some users, however, felt that the situation depends on the city. A person commented, “Mumbai aajao marine drive per log jaatey hain.” Another wrote, “Gujarat me subah 5 baje tak ghumte hai log.” A different user suggested, “Come to Chennai..u feel the same.”

Different cultures approach public safety for women through various initiatives. In Jodhpur, India, the police launched a month-long ‘Women Safety Resolution Campaign’ to strengthen safety for women and students, including awareness programs on cybercrime, molestation, and self-defense.
