‘Thunder Thighs’, ‘Elephants’: Viral Video Accuses Delhi School Of ‘Body-Shaming, Sl*t-Shaming’ Class 12 Girls Over Uniform, Appearance

A school in New Delhi came under fire on the internet after a former student shared an incident in which two female sports teachers were accused of body-shaming Class 12 girls. She alleged that the two teachers even cited the recent sexual assault case in Rajasthan and made “victim-blaming” remarks during a Physical Education (PE) period.

The video, shared on a page named delhitediaries, allegedly features a former student of a school in Dwarka Sector 8, Delhi. According to her, all Class 12 students were assembled during the period, during which two female sports teachers allegedly made remarks about the girl students’ uniforms, body types and appearances.

“An all-girls school in Dwarka Sector 8, the school had the audacity to assemble all of its 12th graders, 16- to 17-year-old girls by the way, to try to teach them the most vulgar things ever,” she said. “They started off, of course, where they always do, with the length of the skirts.”

“They Were Compared To Animals”

The girl claimed that the teachers told the students that their skirts were too short and that their undergarments or shorts were sometimes visible. Then they changed the discussion from dress code to body-shaming. “The term ‘thunder thighs’ was used to shame girls with thicker thighs. Girls with fuller breasts were told that they look ‘ghatiya’ while walking or running,” she shared. “They were compared to animals. They were compared to elephants.”

The former student further alleged that the teachers referred to the recent kidnapping, trafficking and sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Rajasthan, implying that the incident had occurred because of what the victim was wearing. “The two sports teachers lecturing these girls implied that the girl was sexually assaulted because of what she was wearing, and then said, ‘Tum apna dekh lo phir,’” she said.

“All of this happened under the roof of an all-girls school,” she added. “This is a school that claims to empower young girls and then body-shames them. This is a school that claims to educate young girls and then teaches them that sexual assault is the fault of the victim.”

Expressing her disappointment, the former student said she had created some of her best memories at the school but never expected students to be subjected to such remarks. She called on the school to take responsibility, saying, “this is not okay. Body-shaming young girls is not okay. Teaching young girls that assault is the victim’s fault is not okay. Take accountability.”

Internet Calls It “Unacceptable” Behaviour

The video has since gone viral, with many other girls sharing the incident at the school online. Ever since the incident caught the attention, people have begun condemning the alleged remarks and calling for the school to address the matter. “This is so unacceptable,” wrote an individual.

Another user said, “The worst part is realising each one of us has had at least one or more experiences like this in QVS. It’s so sad. Thank you for speaking up!”

“This is not a one-time incident either. As an alumna, I’ve seen this happening when I was in the school as well. The only difference is that the passive-aggressiveness has turned into such blatant, crude and misogynistic remarks made so proudly by FEMALE TEACHERS,” a person shared.

“The funny thing is this is an ALL GIRLS SCHOOL. A school where parents send their daughters thinking it will provide a “safe” environment, not knowing that the very teachers are the reasons why girls feel unsafe in their own body,” someone else remarked.

A different person asked, “What is happening in this country?”

Another person commented, “And believe you me, this is in ALL schools. ALL THESE PREDATORS AND ENABLERS ARE EVERYWHERE.”
