Upa Lokayukta cracks down on illegal homestays in Hampi heritage zone
A view of Hampi, a World Heritage Site

Hampi (Vijayanagara): Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa has taken suo motu cognisance of alleged illegal commercial activities and homestays operating in Hampi, a Unesco World Heritage Site, and registered a complaint against officials of the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority (HWHAMA), revenue authorities and panchayat bodies. The action follows allegations that commercial establishments and homestays were allowed to function in Hampi’s core, buffer and peripheral zones in violation of regulations governing the heritage area.Taking serious note of the allegations, the Upa Lokayukta initiated proceedings and issued notices seeking explanations from officials in Hosapete and Koppal who are alleged to have failed in discharging their duties.Notices have been served on HWHAMA officials, assistant commissioners, tahsildars, executive officers of taluk panchayats and panchayat development officers functioning within the Hosapete and Koppal jurisdictions.According to the complaint, Unesco guidelines and Hampi heritage regulations prohibit unauthorised commercial constructions, resorts and homestays in the core and buffer zones to protect the site’s cultural and historical significance. However, the authorities concerned allegedly failed to curb such activities and, in some cases, are accused of granting approvals in violation of prescribed norms. Considering the seriousness of the allegations, Justice Veerappa has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter.
