Haveri: District minister Rudrappa Manappa Lamani visited several villages in Byadgi and Hirekerur taluks on Friday to inspect crop conditions amid growing concerns over inadequate rainfall.During the visit, farmers told the minister that poor and erratic rain had hampered crop growth and fallen far short of expectations. They said the taluks received only intermittent drizzles, leaving crops such as maize without adequate moisture and raising fears of widespread losses. Citing the worsening situation, farmers urged the govt to declare a green drought.They said rainfall this season had been far below requirements for agriculture. The sporadic showers disrupted farming operations, while maize and other crops already sown were not developing properly. Farmers warned that yields could decline sharply if substantial rain does not arrive within the next few days.Pointing to mounting financial stress, they urged the govt to assess the ground situation and provide relief by declaring a green drought. After hearing their concerns, Lamani assured farmers that he would obtain detailed reports from officials on crop conditions and rainfall patterns before taking appropriate steps.Farmers also highlighted a shortage of urea fertiliser, saying supplies were inadequate at a crucial stage of crop growth. Delays in availability, they said, could adversely affect crop development and productivity. They demanded timely distribution of sufficient quantities of urea and sought immediate intervention from authorities.The farmers further urged the govt to direct concerned officials to respond promptly to their grievances and ensure an uninterrupted supply of fertiliser. Deputy commissioner, zilla panchayat CEO and other district officials accompanied the minister during the inspection.“Our officers are assessing crop conditions affected by inadequate rainfall across Haveri district. We will prepare a factual report and submit it to the govt, which will take suitable action,” Lamani said.
