As many as 844 rowdies were caught and remanded over three days during a special drive against rowdyism conducted across the State, following the instructions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Director-General of Police (DGP) and Head of Police Force Sandeep Rai Rathore said that, in accordance with the instructions of Mr. Vijay to ensure peace and public safety across the State, the Police Department was committed to eradicating the menace of rowdyism, drug abuse, and the use of other psychotropic substances in society.
Accordingly, the department is taking proactive action against such offenders with the objective of decisively curbing criminal activities, dismantling organised criminal networks, and strengthening public safety and the law and order situation across Tamil Nadu.
In the last three days, a total of 15,349 persons — 12,650 History-Sheeted and 2,699 Non-History-Sheeted — classified by police as rowdy elements, were checked. Following interrogation, 3,246 of them were detained for further verification and 844 were remanded under various provisions of law.
Additionally, 294 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act-related cases were registered across the State and 419 drug offenders were arrested.
Also, 267.75 kg of ganja and 2,476 of narcotic tablets were seized. They are valued at about ₹1.43 crore in the open market.
“This pro-active police action forms a part of the Tamil Nadu Police’s relentless and sustained efforts to monitor, dismantle, and control the activities of rowdy elements, drug offenders, and organised criminal syndicates across the State, and will be an ongoing process. It is pertinent to mention that the Tamil Nadu Police remains firmly committed in maintaining public order, ensuring a safe and secure environment for its citizens and in taking prompt and suitable legal action against all forms of criminal and anti-social activities,” Mr. Rathore said.
