When you think of the world’s largest organisms, blue whales and giant sequoia trees usually come to mind. You wouldn’t guess that one of the biggest living things on the planet is a fungus hiding underground.

Deep within Oregon’s Malheur National Forest lives an enormous specimen of the honey fungus, Armillaria ostoyae. Spreading across nearly 10 square kilometres, it is so large that it covers an area bigger than 1,600 football fields.

What’s even more remarkable is that most of it is invisible.

The mushrooms that occasionally appear above ground are only the fruiting bodies of the fungus. The real organism exists beneath the forest floor as a vast network of thread-like structures called mycelia. These strands weave through the soil and tree roots, connecting different parts of the fungus into a single giant organism.

Scientists first realised the true scale of the fungus in the late 1990s. By collecting samples from different parts of the forest and analysing their DNA, researchers discovered that what appeared to be many separate fungi was actually one enormous individual.

Also, the giant fungus is an extremely ancient organism. It may be thousands of years old but its exact age is not known. There are those who think that it has been growing for a very long time even before the building of the Egyptian pyramids.

Although this fungus is huge, it can hardly be called a gentle giant. This is because honey fungi are regarded as forest pathogens and are responsible for killing trees by attacking their roots. With more and more trees dying off due to infection, the spread of the fungus continues.

However, the organism is very significant in an ecological context. It acts as a nutrient-recycling system by decomposing dead wood and organic debris for the benefit of new plant growth.

The finding of the giant fungus of Oregon was a surprise since it broke the conventional view of what could be considered as one organism. Unlike the massive trees and whales, which are the largest living things on Earth, this giant does not overshadow the environment or swim in the oceans but lives below ground.

In conclusion, it is one of nature’s most surprising proofs that the largest organisms on earth are the least obvious to the eye. The fungus is one of nature’s greatest living things.
