India’s exit from the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup following its defeat to Australia has once again brought Harmanpreet Kaur’s future as captain in the shortest format under scrutiny.
Asked about her future at the post-match press conference, head coach Amol Muzumdar backed the veteran to continue leading the side, while acknowledging that the final call rests with the selectors.
“It’s up to the selectors to decide the captain. I think yes. My short and sweet answer would be yes,” Muzumdar told reporters after the match.
The 2026 edition was Harmanpreet’s sixth Women’s T20 World Cup as captain. Under her leadership, India has progressed beyond the semifinals only once, reaching the final in 2020 before losing to Australia. Another early exit is now set to intensify the debate over the team’s leadership ahead of the next T20 cycle.
Here is Harmanpreet Kaur’s record as captain in Women’s T20 World Cups:
- 2016 – Group stage
- 2018 – Semifinals (lost to England)
- 2020 – Final (lost to Australia)
- 2023 – Semifinals (lost to Australia)
- 2024 – Group stage
- 2026 – Group stage
