In most parts of the world, crossing an international border involves passports, checkpoints and immigration officers. In Longwa village in Nagaland, it can mean walking from your bedroom to your kitchen.
Located in the Mon district near India’s border with Myanmar, Longwa is one of India’s most unusual settlements because the international boundary between the two countries runs directly through the village itself. In some places, the border even cuts through individual homes.
The most famous example is the house of the village chief, known locally as the Angh.
According to reporting by multiple travel and regional publications, one side of the Angh’s house lies in India while the other falls inside Myanmar. Residents often joke that the chief can sleep in India and eat meals in Myanmar without ever leaving his home.
Longwa is inhabited primarily by the Konyak Naga tribe, one of Nagaland’s most historically distinctive tribal communities.
For generations, the border itself mattered far less to locals than tribal identity and kinship ties. Families, farms and cultural networks historically stretched across both sides of the modern India-Myanmar boundary long before the international border was formally demarcated.
That created an unusual way of life.
Villagers traditionally moved relatively freely across the border region, and many households ended up physically divided between the two countries. Some residents reportedly have farms in Myanmar while living primarily on the Indian side.
The Angh himself occupies a unique position.
The hereditary chief historically exercised traditional influence over villages on both sides of the border because Konyak tribal authority predated modern national boundaries.
The village’s geography therefore creates a surreal daily reality.
One room may technically lie inside India while another falls under Myanmar’s territory. Signboards, roads and homes exist inside a settlement where the border is often invisible unless specifically pointed out.
Longwa also became famous for preserving parts of Konyak tribal culture.
The Konyaks were historically known for headhunting practices that continued until the 1960s. Older members of the community still carry facial tattoos, ceremonial jewellery and traditional artefacts linked to that warrior history. According to regional cultural reports, Longwa remains one of the best-known places where visitors can still witness elements of traditional Konyak identity.
Yet life in the village has started changing.
Recent policy shifts around India-Myanmar border security created anxiety locally because fencing proposals and restrictions on cross-border movement could fundamentally alter Longwa’s way of life. In 2025, the Associated Press reported that residents feared stricter border controls could split families, disrupt movement and divide infrastructure including schools and community spaces.
For villagers, the border has never been merely geopolitical.
It has always been something far more personal — a line drawn through a shared tribal homeland.
And perhaps that is what makes Longwa so fascinating.
In a world where borders are usually associated with walls and checkpoints, one remote village in northeast India still lives with an international boundary running quietly through kitchens, bedrooms and ordinary daily life.
