Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan said govt decision to cut tax on low-alcohol liquor is dubious. “It serves commercial interests of liquor companies,” he said.In the budget, a major announcement was reduction in tax on alcohol. Liquor made from spirit currently attracts 251% tax in the state. However, citing “lower strength”, finance minister has proposed cutting tax to 120% for drinks with up to 10% alcohol content.“High taxes on alcohol have been imposed over time with the aim of reducing consumption. But this is the first time liquor prices are being cut by more than half. When cheaper alcohol becomes easily available in market, consumption will rise sharply. Even if it is justified as offering lower-strength liquor, overall alcohol use will increase disproportionately,” Vijayan said.“This liquor policy is a misguided approach that could lead younger generation to stronger liquor in no time,” he said. Why did those who did not introduce relief measures or tax cuts for people’s various livelihood hardships choose to cut taxes only for alcohol? Is lowering liquor prices this govt’s priority? What good can that bring to society other than long-term harm?” he asked. In previous years, even minor tweaks in excise policy have drawn criticism. Religious and community organizations, along with Muslim League, have repeatedly expressed concern that alcohol use would increase. Anti-alcohol groups have also raised the issue. “Now tax has been reduced by nearly half. There must be responses from all sides, beyond party politics, against these proposals that expand alcohol consumption. It is our duty to protect next generation from becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs,” he added.
