Gangavathi (Koppal): A lone student from Anegundi on Sunday launched a campaign against plastic pollution at major pilgrimage centres and urged the district administration to impose a complete ban on prohibited plastic items at Huligemma Temple in Huligi, Anjanadri Hill and Pampa Sarovar.Addressing reporters at the Press Bhavan in Gangavathi, Kumari Sindhu said the indiscriminate use of plastic by devotees and pilgrims was harming the environment and contaminating water bodies in the region. She said she had already submitted a memorandum to the DC seeking action but had received no response so far.Sindhu urged the administration to introduce a system to collect plastic carry bags from visitors at entry points and take strict action against shops selling such bags near the pilgrimage centres. She said discarded plastic often finds its way into rivers, canals and drinking water sources, causing environmental damage and posing health risks. The student gave the district administration a one-week deadline to act. Failing that, she warned that she would stage a protest by blocking the entrance gates of the temples. The press conference was organised and addressed entirely by Sindhu without the support of any organisation, drawing attention to her efforts to raise awareness about plastic pollution around some of Koppal district’s most visited religious and heritage sites.
