Chennai: Southern Railway has fast-tracked passenger infrastructure modernisation works worth 24 crore at Tambaram railway station to improve commuter movement and accessibility at one of the city’s busiest rail terminals. The station handles nearly 1.67 lakh passengers daily, including suburban commuters and long-distance travellers. As part of the project, Chennai Division has commissioned a new 8m-wide foot overbridge (FOB) connecting the eastern and western sides of the station across all 10 platforms. Railway officials said the new bridge would help ease congestion and improve passenger circulation during peak hours, while the existing bridge would continue to function simultaneously. The division is also installing nine lifts and 10 escalators across platforms to strengthen accessibility. Civil works for escalators are under way, while lift installation is progressing in phases, with six lifts already erected.Railways said the works are being executed in a live operational environment without disrupting suburban and long-distance train services, making the project technically challenging. Additional passenger amenities planned at the station include expanded road access to the new foot overbridge, a circulating area with parking on the western side, platform shelters and coach guidance boards.
