A British tourist travelling across India has gone viral for challenging online stereotypes about the country. Digital creator Jack Heaton shared his experience in a now‑viral Instagram video titled, “Social media completely lied to me about India.”
In the clip, Heaton is seen visiting Marina Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which is recognised as the world’s second‑largest urban beach. He expressed surprise at how clean the area looked compared to the negative image often shown online.
“We are at the second‑largest beach in the entire world. Would you believe that it is in India?” Heaton said while filming the crowded shoreline. He pointed out that despite thousands of people being present, the beach was largely free of rubbish.
“It actually looks really clean. There’s barely any rubbish. There are a few little bits, but not a lot at all,” he added.
Calling it “insanity” that nearly 10,000 people were on the beach with minimal waste, Heaton also compared the water quality to beaches back home. He noted that the water appeared cleaner than what he would usually find on the coast of England.
“I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to tell you it’s crystal clear blue. It’s not the Maldives, guys, but it’s not bad,” he said.
The video has quickly spread online, sparking conversations about India’s diversity and how social media often highlights only the negatives.

The clip also drew sharp reactions online, with users pointing out how stereotypes often overshadow reality. One remarked, “Don’t tell westerners that you didn’t see a single person pooping on beach. They might get upset and cry.”
Another added, “People just wanna show the bad side to catch more views and comments.”
A third comment read, “Western media will say it’s AI.” Someone else observed, “That’s because you’re in South India. Most westerners travel to North India and don’t realise that South exists. South is much better than North.”
