Jaipur: A rashly driven sleeper bus rammed into a line of vehicles halted to allow the convoy of Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to pass on Sikar Road in Jaipur on Saturday evening, injuring at least six people and damaging eight vehicles. The accident occurred around 6:15 pm near Suncity in the Harmada police station area on Saturday. Police said traffic was stopped briefly for the movement of the chief minister’s convoy after Sharma attended the BJP Jaipur City District training camp under the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Prashikshan Mahaabhiyan 2026 at a resort in Nindar village near Harmada. The convoy had crossed the spot moments before the crash.According to police, the private sleeper bus travelling from Jaipur towards Sikar ploughed into vehicles waiting in the traffic queue due to overspeeding and negligent driving. The impact left several cars badly mangled, while one vehicle was pushed onto the divider.

Should there be stricter penalties for negligent driving?

Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations to pull out trapped occupants from the damaged vehicles. In one severely crushed taxi, rescuers had to break open the rear gate to save a woman and a young boy trapped inside. The boy sustained serious head injuries and was referred to SMS Hospital.Police said the bus was carrying pilgrims travelling from Ahmedabad to Khatu Shyamji and onwards to Haridwar. Preliminary investigation suggests the bus may have suffered a brake failure before the collision. The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police seized the bus and launched a search to trace him.
