As political circles continue to discuss the upcoming marriage of Sharad Pawar’s granddaughter Revathi Sule and BJP leader Arun Lakhani’s son Sarang, fresh attention has turned to the Lakhani family’s longstanding association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP.

The development has also gained significance amid repeated jibes from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut over the growing proximity between the two families, especially as the BJP list of MLCs for the upcoming elections features Lakhani’s name. Lakhani will contest from Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadhchiroli.

If sources are to be believed, the alliance between the two prominent Maharashtra families was facilitated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, both of whom hail from Nagpur and are known to share longstanding ties with the Lakhani and Pawar families.

WHO IS ARUN LAKHANI?

An MTech graduate from Malkapur in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, Arun Lakhani comes from a family deeply rooted in the RSS tradition. His father, who earned an MTech degree from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1934, was actively associated with the Sangh, while his elder brother currently serves as the Sanghchalak of Malkapur.

Lakhani has been associated with the BJP since 1999 and currently serves as joint treasurer of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit, a position he assumed in December 2023.

Beyond politics, he has played a prominent role in sports administration. He has been president of the Maharashtra Badminton Association since 2014, vice-president of the Badminton Association of India since 2016, and treasurer of the national body since 2022. He was also appointed treasurer of the Maharashtra Olympic Association in 2026.

Lakhani has been actively involved in social and educational initiatives as well. He served as president of the RSS-affiliated Laxmanrao Mankar Trust from 2016 to 2026. The trust runs nearly 1,000 single-teacher schools across tribal regions of Vidarbha and undertakes various educational outreach programmes.

Earlier, he headed Narkesari Prakashan, which publishes Marathi daily Tarun Bharat from Nagpur. He also served as president of Sai Mandir, Nagpur, from 1998 to 2003.

The upcoming wedding has generated considerable political interest, with observers noting that it brings together one of Maharashtra’s most influential political families and a family with deep organisational and ideological links to the Sangh Parivar and the BJP.
