SC SIR Verdict: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday launched a sharp attck on the Congress and the opposition’s INDIA bloc after the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the Congress had opposed the exercise because it stood with “illegal voters”.

While addressing a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the verdict had completely exposed the Opposition’s narrative against the voter roll revision exercise initiated by the poll body.

“After a decisive and massive defeat in Bihar and West Bengal and after their nefarious design to instigate anarchy in the country failed, this is now a constitutional defeat for the Congress,” Trivedi said.

He termed the judgment a “political, moral and constitutional defeat” for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the opposition alliance.

Trivedi alleged that the Congress had attempted to blame the Election Commission after electoral setbacks and accused the party of trying to undermine democratic institutions.

“The Supreme Court has upheld this exercise as constitutionally valid, affirmed it as falling within the authority of the Election Commission, and deemed it indispensable for the conduct of free and transparent elections,” he said.

The BJP leader further claimed that the Opposition opposed the SIR exercise because it was protecting “infiltrators” rather than genuine voters.

In another attack on the Congress, Trivedi said, “The opposition parties, particularly the Congress, have their agreements rooted in China, their family ties in Italy, their ideological centre in England, their hub for malicious propaganda within American institutions, and their voter base linked to Bangladesh.”

Echoing similar remarks, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said the Supreme Court verdict had exposed Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party.

“It is clear that Rahul Gandhi and Congress opposed this all through because they stood with illegal infiltrators, not with Indian voters,” Bhandari wrote on X, describing the Opposition’s stand as an “anti-national act.”

Senior BJP leader Nalin Kohli also welcomed the verdict and urged Opposition parties to stop questioning the Election Commission and democratic institutions.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the Supreme Court had clarified all legal issues surrounding the SIR exercise and asserted that the voter list revision process would continue in future as part of electoral reforms.

What Supreme Court Said?

In a major boost to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the constitutional validity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, rejecting allegations by Opposition parties that the exercise was arbitrary or unconstitutional.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymala Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi, ruled that the SIR exercise was aimed at ensuring free and fair elections and strengthening the integrity of electoral rolls.

The verdict came on a batch of petitions challenging the revision process first launched in Bihar and later extended to other states. Opposition parties and petitioners had alleged that the exercise resembled an NRC-like citizenship verification drive and could lead to wrongful deletion of voters.
