Raichur: More than 50,000 iron and folic acid tablets meant for distribution to students at a govt primary school in Gurugunta village of Lingsugur taluk were found dumped in the school toilet, triggering concerns over alleged negligence in implementing the school health programme. The incident came to light on Tuesday, days after a separate controversy in the district over nutritional milk powder allegedly being found in a cattle shed.Acting on information, taluk health officer Dr Amaresh Makapur visited the school and seized the stock. Officials said the recovered tablets were the weekly iron and folic acid supplement (WIFS) tablets, including pink and blue variants. The stock belonged to batch number IFO-039 and carried expiry dates ranging from Oct 2015 to Sept 2017.The seized tablets have been kept at the Gurugunta primary health centre until further orders.The incident has raised questions over the alleged failure of distributing the tablets to students. Medical officers at the Gurugunta PHC had issued a notice to the school’s headmaster on July 13, seeking an explanation for the failure to distribute the tablets to students. Further action is expected based on the inquiry.
