A Mumbai-based woman has claimed on social media that a traffic police officer “threatened” her with fines amounting to Rs 14,000 when she said she would only pay her challan online.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the woman alleged that she was told to either “adjust” the matter or face confiscation of her vehicle. She claimed that once she refused to make any unofficial payment and insisted on paying only through a legitimate challan online, the final bill issued to her was for just Rs 500.

Questioning the officer’s conduct, she asked Mumbai Police, “Why was a wrong and unofficial payment suggested instead of issuing the challan directly? ” You’re a public servant; what right do you have to intimidate the public like this?”

She continued, “I’d rather pay my fines than give even 1 paisa bribe to such dishonest officers who don’t even deserve to wear the uniform. Is dishonesty and corruption a part of your training?”

Mumbai Police Responds Saying She Had “Pending Challans”

Her post quickly gained attention online and prompted a response from the Mumbai Police. Initially, the police replied, “Thank you for bringing this to our notice. You are requested to kindly provide the full address where the incident occurred.”

However, on Tuesday, June 2, Mumbai Police issued another response, disputing parts of the woman’s claims. According to the police, the woman already had pending e-challans worth Rs 3,900. They wrote, “Your pending e-challan amount was ₹3900, which you were told to pay by the lady constable. Yesterday, you were again fined ₹500 for not producing your driving licence. Therefore, your total pending challan amount is now ₹4400, which you were asked to pay. For your kind information.”

Their response prompted a fiery reply from the woman, who said, “I’m fined for not carrying my license, so what consequences will your constable have for faking hefty fines or threatening to seize my vehicle, and mentally traumatising me?”

More People Share Such Similar Experiences

The post has since sparked debate on social media, with some sharing similar experiences.

One user said, “Same thing happened to me on Vashi toll plaza chowki, they saw my belongings in car diggi and took off my license and started blackmailing me for suspension of license and plus 20000 fine. And only let me go after taking 13,000 bribe, that too MAKING me withdraw from ATM.”

“Lol… same thing happened to me in old Mumbai. When I said I would pay the full amount with the charges list and receipt, he told me I would get the challan on my mobile. When I got it, it was 500,” revealed another person.

“Always have Meta glasses with you and a dashcam in ur car for evidence, or else you’ll end up in jail or pay heavy bribes since these corrupt leeches will never let u film them,” a different individual suggested.

Someone else said, “Normalise these call-outs on Social media.” Maybe they stop being corrupt.”
