Minor girl dies after gunshot at uncle’s house in Deoria

Gorakhpur: A 13-year-old girl who had come to visit her uncle’s family was killed after a bullet allegedly fired from a licensed pistol struck her in the head under mysterious circumstances late Tuesday in Deoria district.The deceased, Gopi Barnwal, a resident of Sadat in Ghazipur district, had arrived at her uncle Sushil Barnwal’s house on Mohan Road on June 15.According to police, the incident took place around 11pm when a gunshot was heard from a room inside the house.Family members rushed to the spot after hearing the sound and found the teenager lying in a pool of blood. She had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot.Police from Kotwali reached the scene and sent the body for post-mortem.During the investigation, officers seized Sushil Barnwal’s licensed pistol.Investigators are yet to ascertain whether the weapon discharged accidentally, was handled negligently, or if there was any other circumstance behind the incident.Police said all angles are being examined and no possibility can be ruled out at this stage.SHO Kotwali Rakesh Kumar Rai said the post-mortem report, forensic findings and statements of family members will help determine the exact sequence of events.
