Hyundai Motor India has planned multiple new models slated to arrive by FY2030. One of them will be a new Hyundai sub-4 metre electric SUV (codenamed HE1i), which will be positioned against the Tata Punch EV. Recently, its test mule was caught on camera with heavy camouflage in South Korea.

While official launch timeline of the new Hyundai compact EV is yet to be announced, the model is likely to debut around 2026 Diwali season or early 2027.
Design Highlights
According to reports, the new Hyundai compact electric SUV could be based on the Hyundai Inster that’s sold in select global markets. The spotted test mule features a boxy and upright stance, resembling the Inster EV. While the camouflage concealed most of the design details, the split headlamps, high mounted LED DRLs and lower section of the bumper were clearly visible.
The upcoming Hyundai HE1i EV is expected to borrow several design elements from the Inster EV such as a closed-off grille, charging ports at the front, sporty silver skid plate, circular projector headlamps, pronounced wheel arches, black body cladding, roof rails, pixel-style LED taillamps, squared-off tailgate and alloy wheels up to 17-inch.
Premium Interior
Interior is still a mystery to us. However, the new Hyundai compact EV could be offered with dual 10.25-inch displays (for the infotainment and instrument cluster), wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a sunroof, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, wireless phone charger, OTA updates, Hyundai Bluelink services, ADAS and more.
Battery & Range
Based on the E-GMP (K) platform, the new Hyundai compact electric SUV might share its powertrains with the global-spec Hyundai Inster EV. The latter one is available with 42kWh and 49kWh battery pack options, delivering a claimed range of 300km and 355km, respectively. The EV supports DC fast charging up to 120kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.
Localization & Pricing
Earlier, Hyundai revealed its plan to move towards the mass-market EVs and establish an EV ecosystem to increase sales. If the carmaker manages to achieve a high level of localization for the Hyundai He1i, the EV SUV is expect to be priced competitively against Tata Punch EV.
