Man, father gets 10 years jail term in dowry death case

Times News NetworkKanpur: The additional district and sessions judge Fast Track Court (FTC-52) on Monday sentenced the husband and his father to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 14,000 on them in a dowry death case.The convicts were identified as Bablu and his father Ram Prasad, residents of Ganesh Nagar under Chakeri police station area of the cityAccording to ADGC Ajay Prakash Singh, the prosecution had charged Bablu, his father Ram Prasad, Mahesh Nagar and his wife Gomti alias Kalli, all residents of Ganeshpur under sections 498A/323/304 B IPC and ¾ of the Dowry Prohibition Act.The judge, during the trial, acquitted Mahesh Nagar and his wife Kalli for want of evidence and convicted Bablu and Ram Prasad on June 18, 2026.Budhi Lal, father of deceased Komal in his FIR stated that he had married his daughter Komal with Babu in the year 2012. Her in-laws who were not satisfied with the gifts and dowry given to them at the time of marriage used to torture Komal and would force her to bring more dowry including a motor cycle and a buffalo.On October 15, 2015, Bablu, his father Ram Prasad, Mahesh and his wife Gomti tortured Komal and set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her. She was admitted in UHM Hospital with 75 burn injuries, and succumbed during the treatment.To prove its case, the prosecution examined as many as 8 witnesses and proved its case against Bablu and his father Ram Prasad.Ram Prasad requested the court to take a lenient view while awarding him punishment as he is quite old with weak eye sight and has problem in body movement while Bablu’s counsel pleaded that the accused has been in jail since October 29, 2015 and is an asthma patient and that there is no one in his family to look after his parentsThe judge observed in his order that the period the accused had passed in jail would be adjusted in their sentence, and if they fail to pay the fine, then they have to suffer another one month term of simple imprisonment.
