T’puram: KSEB is actively exploring the opportunity to set up a pumped storage facility at Kakkayam in Kozhikode. The board has signed an agreement with Tata Consulting Engineers to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the same. Kakkayam pumped storage project, designed around Kakkayam and Kuttiady dams in Kozhikode, aims to provide a lasting solution to Malabar region’s power shortage.Pumped storage projects use low-cost daytime electricity and solar power to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper one. They then generate power at night when shortages occur by releasing stored water to spin turbines.KSEB’s investigation wing undertook preliminary feasibility studies and found the site suitable for an installed capacity of 800-1000MW. Tata Consulting Engineers, headquartered in Bengaluru, will conduct detailed geotechnical studies, project planning and DPR preparation. The target is to complete surveys and geotechnical investigations and submit a report in 15 months. After obtaining approvals from central electricity authority and securing environmental and forest clearances, construction may begin by 2029.
